According to a royal expert, the late Prince Philip had a rather pointed nickname for the Duchess of Sussex, and it wasn’t so kind.
The nickname suggested a comparison to Wallis Simpson, the controversial wife of the former King Edward VIII, drawing parallels between Meghan Markle and Wallis, both American and divorced when they married into the royal family.
Prince Philip supposedly referred to Meghan with a name that made reference to this connection.
Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII
Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée who became the Duchess of Windsor, was one of the most controversial royal figures in recent history after King Edward VIII decided to abdicate the throne in December 1936 (after less than a year as a monarch) to be able to marry her.
At the time, royals were prohibited from entering into a marriage with a divorced person – a rule that did not change until 2002, just three years before the then-Prince Charles married Camilla, per the Royal Observer.
Following King Edward and Wallis Simpson’s marriage, they were not allowed to return home without the permission of his brother, the new King George VI, as there were fears it could potentially cause public unrest, Vogue detailed.
During their years of exile, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor constantly attracted headlines – with one of their most shocking incidents occurring in 1937 when they visited Nazi Germany and were photographed giving the notorious Nazi salute upon meeting Adolf Hitler.
Prince Philip’s brutal nickname
Royal biographer Ingrid Seward shed light on Prince Philip’s perspective during an interview with GB News, suggesting that he thought Meghan and Wallis Simpson had many similarities, leading to the adoption of a discreet nickname for the Duchess of Sussex.
Allegedly Prince Philip, who Seward says was known for his astute judgment of character, couldn’t overlook the resemblances between Meghan and Prince Harry and Edward and Mrs. Simpson.
“I think that Prince Philip was very canny about people and he didn’t always see bad in people, he often tried to see the good in them,” Seward said.
“He just could not get away from the similarities between Meghan and Harry and Edward and Ms Simpson, which his why he used to call her the Duchess of Windsor. Not to her face though, he used to call her DOW,” she added.
In her book ‘My Mother and I‘, Seward delved further into Prince Philip’s reservations about Meghan, describing him as “wary” of the former Suits actress and her potential impact on the royal family.
While Prince Philip saw Meghan as potentially disruptive, Queen Elizabeth II held “high hopes” for her, indicating differing perspectives within the royal family regarding Meghan’s role and influence.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left royal life
Since stepping back from their royal duties in 2020 and relocating to California, Meghan and Harry have maintained a relatively low profile within the royal sphere.
While Harry is set to visit the UK for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, with a service to be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral on May 8, according to the Daily Express. Meghan is expected to remain in the US, citing safety concerns and a desire to avoid stirring up controversy.
Despite occasional returns to the UK for significant events like Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022, Meghan has opted out of attending others, such as King Charles III’s coronation, which Harry attended alone last year.
It’s clear that Meghan is choosing to prioritizing her safety and peace amidst constant scrutiny and public interest in her relationship with the royal family.

The older one gets, the more complex educational work assigned to students gets. However, there are some instances where kids receive complicated homework.
When such instances arise, some parents seek the help of the online community to derive an answer for their little ones. Some of them are shared on the Reddit and Twitter platforms.
Grade 1 English
A mom was puzzled by her first-grade son’s English homework, where he had to encircle the photos that had the same ending sound as a fish’s fin. However, the options available were far from the picture. The available choices included a hamburger bun, a frog, a jar lid, and a spoon.
Some Reddit users offered their thoughts to the clueless mom, stating that the ending sound did not necessarily have to rhyme with fin. Some answers included bun and spoon, which both ended with an “n.”
Kindergarten School Work
Kindergarten homework questions are usually easy to answer with an adult’s help. However, one parent couldn’t think of the three-letter word required to name the picture printed on the activity sheet. The picture included a rabbit with her bunnies playing.
Fortunately, a kind Reddit user thought of the best possible answer: pet. “These kinds of worksheets try to make the last one more difficult by switching the sound of the letter to the end of the word to try and throw the kid off,” the person said.
Grade 3 Math Problem
Math problems for elementary students are often easily computed with all the numbers given in the problem. However, a Grade 3 student had to solve the question, “Janell had 15 marbles. She lost some of them. How many does Janell have now?”
One Reddit user suggested that the answer was less than 15 but did not think it was a fair question for someone in the third grade. Other users believed that the student should answer in a similar manner as the question, such as “Janell lost her marbles.” Another user said, “She has some left.”
A Six-Year-Old’s Homework
While some educational problems for six-year-olds are visual, one student’s assignment was beyond the comprehension of her parents. On her activity sheet appeared a print of a paint splatter and several apples.
The question read, “How many apples could be covered by the paint. There cannot be more than 20.” Several Reddit users were also confused by the question, while one believed it was a riddle.
Grade 1 Math
One Twitter user shared a Singaporean math problem for grade one students, and it seemed almost impossible to solve. However, one person solved the problem but tweaked the question a bit.
Another Math Problem
Another math question was posted on Twitter, leaving people confused. The question made students calculate the perimeter of a shape best on the calculations of another rectilinear shape.
One person replied to the post with a complicated answer and sarcastically said, “It’s very much justified to ask these to a [ten-year-old].”
Solving for X
Math can sometimes be complicated but often has one solution. However, this one math problem was too complex for the Twitter world.
“An orchestra of 120 players takes 40 minutes to play Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. How long would it take for 60 players to play the symphony? Let P be the number of players and T the time playing,” the question read. While it may be too complex, one Twitter person replied:
“The math is irrelevant in the case of this Beethoven 9 problem. As a performer who has performed it many times, the speed of the symphony is NOT a function of the number of musicians performing it.”
